There are 22 islands and numerous rocks in the group, with Cunda (Alibey) Island aroud Ayvalık. People live only on Cunda and Lale Islands. Cunda and Lale islands are linked to Ayvalık on the mainland, by a causeway enabling transportation by car. Wild life can be observed on the other islands, especially wild rabbits on Ilyosta Island. Also, those islands are the main points of interest to tourists as having small beaches and bays.
Cunda Island, also called Alibey Island, is close to Lesbos, Greece.The island is surrounded by pine trees and olive groves. There are monasteries and churches in the island. The biggest church of island is Taksiyarhis. which offers one of the most perfect panoramic sunsets in the world. The island’s former Greek population was expelled in the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey and was replaced by Muslims from Crete, Cretan Turks.
